Turn that Frown Upside Down
Would you like 2010 to be more prosperous and joyful than 2009? If you’re like most Americans, you’ve experienced this country’s economic downturn. And, you probably know that it isn’t over yet. However, you don’t have to let these circumstances direct your fate!
This continued economic contraction is forcing a great majority of individuals to generate creative solutions to maintain their security and independence. Some have created their own jobs, gone back to school, or taken a second job. Others have let things get the better of them. Which will you be?
If you’re ready to think creatively to ensure your economic future, consider running the process below. It only takes twenty minutes, and it could mean a much brighter future for you and yours.
1. Make a list of the top 5 things you most want in your career or financial life ($x/year, fun atmosphere, etc).
2. Write down what 5 emotional needs those things fulfill (security, freedom, joy, etc).
3. Remember the last time you came up with a great solution to a problem. How did you feel just before that solution popped into your mind?
4. Remembering that feeling, notice where it is in your body. If it had a shape or color, what would it be?
5. Now that you’re engaged with your creativity and have given it form, ask it to find a few new solutions that will give you everything you want in lists #1 and 2.
6. From those solutions, decide which one or two you can employ right now to get yourself moving forward. Imagine taking the necessary steps with confidence, certainty, and excitement. It’s going to be great!
If any fears surface in regards to taking those steps, consider booking a private session.
Envisioning Success
Everything that exists in our modern world was first conceived in the mind. The power of imagination is evident in the modern world all around us. We recognize and acknowledge it so readily art and music, and yet we most often forget that imagination also directs the way we live our lives. And, what better time to envision your success than at the new year?
Albert Einstein understood the faculty of imagination. He knew that dwelling on what was purely “realistic” negated the magic of limitless possibility. And thus a not particularly good student working in the U.S. patent office became an icon for intelligence and imagination. Roger Bannister was the first person to run a four-minute mile. If he’d believed everyone who said it wasn’t possible, he would never have broken the world record.
Exceptional people have the courage to dream big. The first step to success in any endeavor, whether the goal is to achieve your desired weight, start a new business, or improve your marriage, is to imagine what it will be like when you are there. Take a couple minutes for yourself and follow these steps:
- Bring to mind something that you really want, but don’t fully believe you can have, or deserve.
- Pretend it’s one year from now, and that you have achieved the best possible outcome.
- How do you look, feel, or act?
- Experience what is it like to have succeeded.
- Now, take this information, and write it down, sketch it out, or tell someone about it!
This short exercise activates your imagination, which is, in essence, directing the flow of energy. By imagining your ideal, you set in motion a chain of events that lead to your success. My maternal grandmother, a successful entrepreneur, used to say to me, “Think longer, think smarter, think BIGGER!”
